Koushal S. August 21, 2013

Drupal, an open source content management system initially release on January 2011. According to Wikipedia more than 22,900 entrepreneurs use Drupal (as of August’13). Major competitors of Drupal are Joomla and WordPress, where Drupal provides a perfect interface to the users which require no deep programming skills. It is good if a user knows how to use modules in Drupal for better development. By using Drupal modules a developer not only improves the performance of his/her Drupal website also can increase the UX of website. Some of necessary modules here mentioned below are-

Views

This module gives you an opportunity to play with your content and display and do whatever you want.  In sort, it is a small query builder by which you can display any sort of list, tables of content and forum posts. Using this you can increase UX of your front page in your different custom ways.

Content Construction Kit (CKK)

This module gives you advantage to add custom fields to a node with no coding, using this you can order the fields as per your requirement. Where another strong module available over network, MultiGroup and I am using it to create multiple fields with different base of CCK fields.

PathAuto

PathAuto is a valuable module in Drupal to make website or blog post URL crispy and clean. By which user and search engine bot knows the mean of that particular URL. Here below I have mentioned the default URL structure of Drupal.

You can create more meaningful and user friendly URL by using URL settings @ edit screen where PathAuto module do it in much easier way using Token module (which automatically create a URL or path when user creates a new page or post in blog content). Here below I have mentioned an example-

Mollom

Everybody dislikes spam over the network, where developer uses the CAPTCHA to protect the things from spammers. CAPTCHA shall sort out the spam problem but in other hand “Mollom” gives you the better moderation services. “Mollom” only requires CAPTCHA if it thinks that particular user or IP submitting the spam content using form. So here I recommended use “Mollom” module to kick the spammers. Kudos!!

Backup & Migrate

It doesn’t matter how cool and advance website you have developed when we talk about Backup. It is good if we have backed up our website or contents to avoid data lose. Drupal core tool doesn’t have capability to back up website and contents but we can do it by using “Backup and Migrate” module.  So add it now and save your data!

Google Analytics

Google Analytics module gives you an opportunity of track your full website and we can get all information of visitors including visitor location, referral site information, AdSense tracking, track page not found (404) and many more.

There are lots of modules available over the network, some are free and some are paid. Here I have mentioned some important modules for beginners through which he/she can improvise his/her Drupal website performance.

I love to know more useful Drupal modules! Share your thoughts using comment.

  3. Hey! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any
trouble with hackers? My last blog (WordPress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few
months of hard work due to no back up.
Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?

    • Hey Flynn,

You can secure your blog by changing account account authorship besides admin (by default) + a strong password for the same.

And also use plugins to secure you WordPress blog or website.

      Best of Luck!

It’s simple, yet effective. A lot off times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and appearance.
